April Clark has 28 years of experience in her profession. She has worked extensively with adults with psychotic, substance dependency, anxiety/trauma, and mood disorders. She counseled children with severe oppositional defiance, attention deficit and hyperactivity, neglect and abuse (physical, sexual, and emotional), neurodivergent, peer and sibling conflicts, low self-esteem, grief/loss issues, conduct problems, suicidal ideation, psychosis, and anxiety disorders. April’s experience with children’s mental health disorders can assist with parenting issues. April has been trained in NC child welfare and spent many years as a foster care/adoption social worker and psychotherapist. Prior to coming to Duke in November 2021 she worked as a medical social worker, school social worker, community outpatient provider, crisis intervention therapist, and in criminology. She has years of experience conducting comprehensive clinical assessments. She has completed numerous training courses in evidence-based practices.  April is a culturally competent therapist who mostly uses cognitive behavioral therapy to help clients understand how their thoughts affect their emotions and behaviors. However, she has training in trauma-based therapy, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused brief therapy just to name a few. April is a certified licensed social worker supervisor.
