Tips for Supervisors: Helping Employees After a Traumatic Event

  • Take care of your own people first. Utilize consultation available from PAS and other resources about coping with trauma.
  • Communicate with your employees about what transpired, and future plans, including measures to assist victims, witnesses, etc.
  • Make it clear that this is a difficult period, and it's okay to share feelings of anxiety, fatigue or frustration.
  • Take steps to reduce the source of any current stress.
  • Encourage teamwork and cooperation.
  • Modify office rules and procedures that are counterproductive after a disaster.
  • Prevent overwork and exhaustion.
  • Set clear work standards. Realize that people will be working below capacity for a time.
  • Acknowledge the value of professional counseling, and encourage your employees to get whatever help they need.
  • Provide opportunities for employees to talk about their stressful experiences.
  • Don't underestimate the impact of stress on you as an individual. Take care of yourself, too!
